ABSTRACT
PURPOSE:
The Buda Perinatal Centre (Budai Perinatális Központ) in Hungary was founded on a shared vision of holistic, family-centred support. Our aim is to present a unique midwife-led model of interdisciplinary perinatal care that can be maintained even in restrictive health systems. As a private initiative, we developed a sustainable financial model independent of the national health insurance system, and aligned our work with the principles of the International Childbirth Initiative (ICI).
DISCUSSION:
What sets the BPK apart is our unique midwife-led continuity of care system. Families are supported throughout pregnancy, birth and the postpartum period by a dedicated team. As a perinatal centre—rather than a birth house—we offer access to a broad interdisciplinary network, including perinatal psychologists, physiotherapists, bodyworkers, doulas, lactation consultants, and others, all actively involved in the care process.
The three main pillars of our perinatal care:
Integrated Medical and Physical Care: A collaborative team of midwives and doctors ensures both safety and continuity across all stages. Complexities are addressed through multidisciplinary dialogue and specialist input.
Bodywork and Somatic Focus: We emphasize the importance of the body's innate wisdom, offering Spinning Babies® classes and individualised sessions for breech, discomfort, premature contractions and newborn health.
Extensive Information Sharing and Professional Development: Partner-inclusive birth preparation, personalised consultations, and workshops for professionals in areas like communication, bodywork, perinatal psychology and bereavement care.
EVIDENCE WHERE RELEVANT:
Since our opening; in the past 2.5 years, over 250 babies were born with us.
KEY MESSAGE:
Despite a national decline in births, our average monthly birth numbers have increased in 2025. Our model shows that midwife-led, interdisciplinary perinatal care can be maintained outside conventional systems, offering a sustainable path toward respectful, integrated care.
