ABSTRACT
THE LEARNING OUTCOMES:
At the conclusion of this workshop, the participant will be able to:
1. To execute the manual perineal protection accurately
2. To identify different anatomical structures involved in a perineal tear
3. To repair second-degree perineal tears
4. Principles of perineal trauma healing
THE PROCESS/ACTIVITIES:
The course has two components: theoretical, 3 lectures, and then rotational workshops:
Theoretical lectures: 30 min
1. The biomechanics of manual perineal protection
2. Discussion of the pros and cons of performing an episiotomy
3. Repair of a second-degree perineal tear
Rotational workshops: 60 min ·
1. Pelvic Floor anatomy on model
2. Manual perineal protection on the model
3. Demonstrated videos on second-degree perineal repair
4. Healing complications of perineal tears
The PEERS workshop will provide you with the knowledge of how to prevent perineal injuries during childbirth and how to identify and correctly repair the injuries in order to prevent anal incontinence, perineal pain, dyspareunia, and healing complications.
Practical hands-on training will help the audience acquire manual skills (already shown and discussed in the lectures) to help prevent perineal trauma at the time of the crowning of the head. The difference between the protection of the perineum when an episiotomy is or is not performed will be demonstrated. Participants will also undergo a special pelvic anatomy building.
Two/three experts in current views on manual perineal protection, perineal tear/ episiotomy, and all other second-stage of labor variables will summarize all points previously discussed with an emphasis on practical use in routine clinical practice.
AUDIENCE PARTICIPATION:
Midwives/Obstetricians; Residences/students of Midwifery/Obstetricians
