ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND:
Introduction
The effectiveness of a training programme is directly linked to the transfer of learning back to the workplace. Several factors either facilitate or hinder the application of what was learned.
OBJECTIVES:
The purpose of this article is to explore the perceived factors that influence Advanced Antenatal Care nurse-midwives practitioners’ performance after training.
METHODS:
A qualitative, descriptive study design was conducted, including two focus group discussions involving trained advanced antenatal (nurse-midwives) practitioners and one-on-one interviews with operational managers in two purposely selected intervention districts. Data was analysed using an abductive approach.
RESULTS:
Four themes emerged from the analyses that describe the factors that influence transfer of learning. First, the characteristics of the AANC practitioners include their competency and attitudes. Second, educational design comprises sharing information on programme implementation and content. Third, transfer climate encompasses support for action and communication. Fourth, the Workplace environment includes workload, material resources, and societal factors. The identified themes align with the systemic transfer of learning conceptual framework adopted for the study.
CONCLUSIONS:
The ability to transfer newly acquired knowledge and skills is the ultimate goal of any training programme. However, evidence shows that transfer and workplace environments are complex. Several factors that either facilitate or hinder application of what was learned were explored.
KEY MESSAGE:
Health care programme implementors and managers need to understand factors influencing training transfer to maximizing the benefits of training.
