ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND:
Vertical birth is performed at an angle between 90° and 135° relative to the horizontal plane of the woman’s spine. The birth experience constitutes a unit of analysis that considers the interactions between the pregnant woman and her environment, integrating knowledge, perceptions, and the emotional component.
OBJECTIVES:
To explore the experiences of women who underwent vertical birth in a regional public hospital.
METHODS:
A qualitative, descriptive study was conducted with seven women who experienced a vertical birth. Data saturation was achieved, and information was collected through in-depth interviews. Content analysis followed Berelson’s methodology.
RESULTS:
Participants reported that support from the midwife, the presence of a significant other, a supportive environment, and being informed about the vertical birth process positively influenced their experience. Women described the delivery as more comfortable, faster, and less painful. They expressed a range of emotions, including fear, anxiety, happiness, and tranquility, with love for the newborn emerging as the most prominent feeling, although not directly linked to the birth position. Environmental factors such as background music, reduced lighting, and the design of the vertical birth bed were also positively valued.
CONCLUSIONS:
the participants viewed the vertical birth experience positively. The option to choose vertical birth, supported by midwives and access to information, may contribute to greater empowerment of women in selecting their preferred birthing position.
