ABSTRACT
PURPOSE:
To share the early development and growing impact of the Wales Inclusive Maternity Network, co-established with the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Lead Midwife in Welsh Government and the Royal College of Midwives Wales. The network aims to strengthen the midwifery profession in Wales by creating a safe and supportive space for midwives, student midwives and maternity support workers from ethnically diverse backgrounds.
DISCUSSION:
The network was formed in response to persistent inequalities in the midwifery workforce and in recognition of the need for greater support, visibility and connection among underrepresented professionals. Although still in its early stages, the network holds regular online meetings and has created a trusted space for open dialogue, peer support and shared learning. Key themes discussed include racism in the workplace, barriers to progression and the emotional labour of navigating systems that lack cultural awareness. Reflections from participants suggest that the network helps reduce professional isolation and builds a collective voice to influence change within the maternity system.
EVIDENCE WHERE RELEVANT:
Participant feedback highlights the importance of having a dedicated space for open conversation and peer connection. The network aligns with national commitments such as the Anti-Racist Wales action plan and the maternity and neonatal quality statement, reinforcing its strategic relevance.
KEY MESSAGE:
Midwifery associations can be strengthened through intentional, inclusive spaces that support diverse voices within the profession. The Wales Inclusive Maternity Network offers a model for other countries aiming to embed equity within professional structures and maternity systems.
