ABSTRACT
PURPOSE:
The purpose of this presentation is to present the work of participatory photography project called The Women and Wast Project that took place in Northern Ghana in May 2025.
DISCUSSION:
Like many of the conditions exacerbated by the climate crisis, e-waste, and waste in general, is a problem known to disproportionately affect the health and wellbeing of women. The World Health Organisation, for example, links prematurity, stillbirth, and low-for-gestation age babies with e-waste contamination and we are only just beginning to consider the immediate and long-term effects on babies and children (See for example: https://www.who.int/news-room/factsheets/detail/electronic-waste-(e-waste) The Women and Waste project was in direct response to these issues and the project leads participation in the AIMS- Imperial College Global Fellows Programme in Accra in November 2024. The subsequent Imperial College Seed fund awarded project provided the opportunity to use creative engagement practice to provoke conversation about waste with women and continue deep thinking around waste solutions and wider environment impact on women. Photovoice is a participatory photography method that seeks to empower marginalised groups by sharing their experiences of a phenomenon through an equitable method. In this case, the topic is waste and the use of photography provided the method through which women informed the topic at community level by their own lived experience and photography.
EVIDENCE WHERE RELEVANT:
Not applicable.
KEY MESSAGE:
Climate change is a topic that arguably belongs as central to topics across midwifery and women's health. The Women and Waste Project presents an example of activating conversations with mothers and women at the community level and provides creative method examples.
