ABSTRACT
PURPOSE:
Twinning is a cross-cultural, reciprocal process where two individuals / groups of people work together to achieve a joint goal. In a bid to strengthen professional development, peer learning, and collaboration among midwives, the National Midwives Association of Uganda (NMAU) implemented a 9-month in-country twinning project. Led by twin experts, the initiative aimed to adapt the international confederation of midwives twinning model to the Ugandan context—fostering a culture of mentorship, teamwork, and practical skill sharing among midwives from different regions in Uganda.

DISCUSSION:
A national call for participation was issued through NMAU’s platforms, attracting a large number of applicants. Using clear selection criteria—such as geographic proximity, willingness to learn, communication skills, and professional standing—well-matched twin pairs were formed. The pairs reflected diverse backgrounds and experiences, creating space for shared learning. To guide their collaboration, participants engaged in a SMARTI goal-setting workshop, helping them refine their initial ambitions into specific, achievable workplans. Regular virtual and Physical meetings kept the momentum alive, offering platforms for sharing challenges, celebrating progress, and peer mentoring. One-on-one support was provided where needed, allowing for tailored solutions and flexible planning.

EVIDENCE WHERE RELEVANT:
Midwives reported improved self confidence, communication, leadership and practical skills. All of them appreciated the opportunity to learn from peers in different settings, adopt new practices, and gain visibility in their professional roles at National Midwives Association of Uganda. It was evident that the collaborative environment created a safe space for innovation, problem-solving, and motivation.

KEY MESSAGE:
The in-country twinning experience significantly enriched the professional growth of participating midwives. By promoting reciprocal learning, goal-oriented collaboration, and sustained peer support, the project demonstrated that twinning can be a powerful model for strengthening midwifery practice. There is need to scale up twinning among other midwifery associations. Digital technology/AI 1 (including three-minute presentation competition)
