ABSTRACT
THE LEARNING OUTCOMES:
Adolescent pregnancy remains a critical global health issue, with over 21 million adolescent girls experiencing pregnancy every year - most in low- and middle-income countries (1). Many young adolescents face particular medical and psychosocial challenges, and midwives are uniquely positioned to improve outcomes for adolescent mothers through respectful, evidence-based, and context-sensitive care (2). This practical, interactive 90-minute workshop equips midwives with practical skills and knowledge to provide high-quality care throughout pregnancy and intrapartum for adolescent girls. By the end of the session, participants will be able to: Identify the unique psychosocial and perinatal needs of pregnant adolescents. Reflect on personal values and biases surrounding adolescent pregnancy. Develop individualized care plans for adolescents for pregnancy, labor, and birth.

THE PROCESS/ACTIVITIES:
Participants will be introduced to four interactive modules following the perinatal journey of Meena, a 14-year-old pregnant adolescent - a workshop developed by UNFPA Asia-Pacific and Burnet for implementation in South Asian countries with high adolescent birth rates. Each module covers specific care needs of adolescents antenatally, intrapartum, postpartum, and regarding Family Planning. This workshop focuses specifically on antenatal and intrapartum considerations. Activities include: • Brief background and evidence review. • Case-based group discussions to identify strengths, risk factors, and develop care plans. • Videos to explore challenges and brainstorm evidence-based solutions. • Self-reflection activities to examine personal values and biases. Facilitators will guide participants through structured case scenarios, prompting critical thinking and collaborative problem-solving.

AUDIENCE PARTICIPATION:
Midwives will work in small groups, engaging in discussions and case-based scenarios to develop adolescent-centered pregnancy and intrapartum care plans. Participants will complete a confidential values clarification questionnaire and revisit it post-session to reflect on learning and attitude shifts. Additional reading World Health Organization.
