ABSTRACT
THE LEARNING OUTCOMES:
To understand the risk factors, causes, and treatment of PPH
To recognize and respond promptly to excessive blood loss and clinical signs such as tachycardia, hypotension, pallor, and uterine atony.
To demonstrate the ability to initiate emergency response procedures, including the administration of uterotonics and appropriate escalation.
To understand the importance of accurately measuring blood loss
To demonstrate collaboration and effective communication between a multidisciplinary team
To demonstrate the ability to reflect on scenarios, identify areas for improvement, and reinforce key concepts.
THE PROCESS/ACTIVITIES:
The session begins with a brief introduction and definition of PPH, including risk factors.
The simulation team, using patient actors and low-cost props, such as “magic trousers” with red material to indicate bleeding, will guide the audience through a simulated scenario, beginning with a clinical history of the actor patient, identifying excessive bleeding, initiating emergency protocols, and escalating care.
Role play includes
Activation of the emergency bell/ Call for help
Clear closed-loop communication using ISBAR (Introduction, Situation,
Background, Assessment, Recommendation)
Appropriate role delegation
Assessing the woman through clinical examination, such as tachycardia, hypotension, pallor, and uterine atony.
Stopping the bleeding, utilizing a structured approach to assessment and management utilizing the "4 Ts" framework·
Key interventions such as uterine massage, medication administration (e.g., oxytocin), and potential surgical options·
All blood loss is measured by using calibrated methods·
Appropriate fluid resuscitation·
Documentation of PPH events, including management plan
AUDIENCE PARTICIPATION:
This workshop is relevant to all attending this conference. English may not be their first language, simple language will be used, and supporting material such as posters and algorithms will be provided. Audience participation is encourage, as it is an opportunity for peer to peer learning. The audience will also be invited to share real-life experiences with PPH, promoting a deeper understanding of challenges involved.
