ABSTRACT
THE LEARNING OUTCOMES:
As global interest in midwifery-led care grows, Birth Centers (BCs) are emerging as effective, safe, and respectful options for physiological childbirth. Their implementation requires not only clinical expertise but also robust strategic planning, governance structures, and alignment with health system frameworks. Properly designed and managed BC supports continuity of care, reduces unnecessary interventions, and enhances maternal and newborn outcomes. This workshop aims to provide practical tools and strategic insights to help midwives and stakeholders implement sustainable, high-quality BC in their local contexts as part of a national health service. Learning outcomes: 1) Understand the organizational and care principles that underpin a BC. 2) Identify the key steps for planning, developing, and integrating a BC into the healthcare system. 3) Recognize institutional, clinical, and cultural challenges involved in the implementation process. 4) Apply tools for strategic planning, governance, and transformational leadership in the design of a BC.

THE PROCESS/ACTIVITIES:
The workshop is structured into three progressive parts: Conceptual introduction to the BC model: philosophy, clinical evidence, and European standards. Planning and implementation: stakeholder mapping, case for change, governance structure, service portfolio, and workforce planning. Change management and sustainability: communication strategies, clinical team engagement, and outcome evaluation. The session will include practical activities such as case study analysis, group work, and simulation exercises focused on care pathways and service design. A comprehensive guide, scheduled for publication in December 2025, will detail the full process for implementing a BC. This guide has been developed as part of the Naixem innovation project, led by the Valencian Innovation Agency. It brings together contributions from MUNet Europe, City University, and the School of Architecture at the Polytechnic University of Valencia.

AUDIENCE PARTICIPATION:
The workshop is highly interactive. Additional reading Rocca-Ihenacho L, Batinelli L, Thaels E, Rayment J, Newburn M, McCourt C. Midwifery Unit Standards. University of London; 2018.
