ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND:

OBJECTIVES:
This study aimed to clarify how fathers perceive breastfeeding and their thoughts regarding their roles and dilemmas in supporting it.

METHODS:
Semi-structured interviews were conducted with nine fathers whose partners had breastfed (or were breastfeeding) following the 2010 legislative revision. The data were analyzed using Mayring’s (2000) qualitative content analysis method.

RESULTS:
From 223 coded statements, seven categories and 22 subcategories were identified: “Breastfeeding is important,” “Developing a relationship of trust,” “Interest in breast milk components,” “Decision-making is up to mothers,” “Breastfeeding is challenging,” “The role of fathers,” and “Lack of accurate knowledge.” Fathers recognized the value of breastfeeding and felt responsible for supporting mothers. However, vague knowledge and perceived difficulties posed barriers to their active support.

CONCLUSIONS:
Providing fathers with accurate breastfeeding information during pregnancy and creating opportunities for couples to discuss infant feeding as a means of optimal nutrition are essential for strengthening paternal support for breastfeeding continuation.
