ABSTRACT
THE LEARNING OUTCOMES:
1. At the end of this lesson, the student midwife/ midwife/ clinician will be expected to demonstrate the technical aspects of cardiotocograph (CTG) interpretation, which are.
• Explain and demonstrate the correct paper speed for CTG monitoring and interpretation.
• Explain and demonstrate correct placement of the CTG probes.
• Explain and demonstrate maternal positioning for CTG monitoring.
2. At the end of this lesson, the student midwife/ midwife/ clinician is expected to use her knowledge of cardiotocograph terminology to correctly identify the features of the fetal heart rate pattern.
3. At the end of this workshop, the student midwife/ midwife/ clinician will be able to describe how the following clinical contexts impact CTG interpretation: ·
•Fetal response to the progression of labor.·
•Medications that affect the fetal heart rate pattern.·
•Effect of gestational age on fetal heart rate.
•Maternal disease or conditions of pregnancy that negatively affect placental function.
4. At the end of this lesson, the student midwife/ midwife/ clinician will integrate the elements of the acronym DR C BRAVADO to interpret and classify the CTG:
DR (Define Risk as high, medium or low based on clinical situation), C (contractions- frequency, duration, intensity, rhythm and resting tone); Br- Baseline Rate; A- Accelerations; V (variability- described as absent, minimal, moderate, or marked), A (accelerations- spontaneous, stimulated or none), D (absent, early, variable, late or prolonged), O (overall assessment and written plan) (Bailey, 2009)
THE PROCESS/ACTIVITIES:
A brief didactic lecture on CTG interpretation terminology, the fetal response to labor, and parameters to take into consideration during CTG interpretation will be provided. Thereafter, guided CTG interpretation using case studies with corresponding cardiotocograph traces will follow.
AUDIENCE PARTICIPATION:
The audience will be required to work in pairs to interpret the cardiotocographs provided by the facilitator.
