ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND:
Clinical learning is a core component of midwifery education, essential for developing the skills and competencies required for quality maternal care. In the Maldives, the Advanced Diploma in Midwifery is offered at the Maldives National University (MNU) School of Nursing, where student midwives undergo clinical training under the supervision of registered nurse-midwives. However, limited research exists on the quality and challenges of these clinical experiences, particularly in decentralized campus settings.

OBJECTIVES:
This study explores the clinical learning experiences of student midwives at MNU’s Thinadhoo and Kulhudhuffushi Campuses to overcome challenges of clinical learning and to improve the quality of midwifery education.

METHODS:
A qualitative descriptive approach was employed. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and focus group discussions with student midwives from the two campuses. Thematic analysis was used to identify key patterns and insights from participants’ experiences.

RESULTS:
Three themes emerged from the data analysis; 1) Role conflict in dual responsibilities, the participant had challenging experience in performing the tasks of the student as well as acting in a professional nurse capacity2) Supportive work environment and staff, participants described their supportive work environment including technical and administrative support. 3) Insufficient procedure opportunities, participants described the unavailability of procedures to complete the clinical requirements.

CONCLUSIONS:
The findings offer valuable insights into the clinical learning experiences of student midwives at MNU and integrating student feedback into curriculum planning are critical to enhancing clinical learning in midwifery education. Further research is needed to explore the perspectives of clinical mentors and preceptors.
