ABSTRACT
PURPOSE:
This presentation will explore the development, structure, and practical application of the toolkit, and advocate for inclusive curricula as a foundation for equitable and effective midwifery education.
DISCUSSION:
An inclusive midwifery education is essential to preparing students to provide culturally safe, personalised care to diverse populations. Midwifery students have consistently commented on a lack of representation of ethnic, cultural, sexual, and gender diversity within the midwifery curriculum, contributing to disparities in student experience and sense of belonging. The education toolkits that exist to assess curriculums are not discipline specific and the Decolonising Midwifery Education Toolkit has not included sexual orientation, gender identity, learning difficulties and disabilities.
A diverse team—including midwifery students, educators, a service user, and a cultural safety lead—participated in a three-hour facilitated workshop to co-create the MIiC toolkit. This collaborative session was designed to harness lived experiences and pedagogical perspectives to inform the development of a meaningful, practical resource. Participants identified key elements of inclusive curriculum design and delivery, which were synthesised into a set of guiding questions.
The objective of the toolkit is to enable educators to focus more explicitly on where diversity, inclusion and cultural safety can be embedded into the curriculum
