ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND:
Postpartum child-rearing anxiety significantly affects maternal mental health, especially among multiparous women, who face different psychological challenges than primiparous mothers. The first month postpartum is a crucial period for mothers to adapt to their child-rearing environment. Assessing anxiety at this stage is essential for providing appropriate support.
OBJECTIVES:
To develop a scale for assessing child-rearing anxiety in multiparous women one month postpartum and to evaluate the scale’s reliability and validity.
METHODS:
We defined the structural concept of child-rearing anxiety one month postpartum and created measurement items. Then, we conducted a questionnaire survey with postpartum women who gave birth at University A. Data from 140 multiparous women were analyzed through item analysis, exploratory factor analysis, Pearson’s correlation analysis, and Cronbach’s alpha coefficient evaluation. (Ethics approval number: 2017-11-Rapid-16)
RESULTS:
A total of 254 responses were collected (response rate, 65.0%). The mean age of participants was 33.7±4.1 years. Out of 18 items, 2 were removed because of floor effects and 2 because of ceiling effects. Exploratory factor analysis led to the removal of 4 more items, resulting in a final 10-item scale with 3 factors: (1) "Community Child-Rearing Resources," (2) "Life with a Newborn," and (3) "Continuation of Breastfeeding." Factor contribution rates were 26.92%, 29.11%, and 26.40%, respectively. The between-factors correlation coefficient r ranged from 0.33 to 0.48, and the total child-rearing anxiety scale score had a weak correlation with EPDS (r=0.47). Cronbach’s alpha coefficients were 0.83 overall, 0.83 for factor 1, 0.69 for factor 2, and 0.80 for factor 3.
CONCLUSIONS:
The postpartum child-rearing anxiety scale for multiparous women comprises 10 items in a 3-factor structure, and its reliability and validity are confirmed.
