ABSTRACT
PURPOSE:
Introduction: Women's rights in maternity care (MC) are often disregarded, often with dramatic consequences. The White Ribbon Alliance (WRA) has drawn up a charter for respectful maternity care (SMR), highlighting women's rights. As part of the Projet d'appui à la santé sexuelle et reproductive égalitaire (PASSREL), the Canadian Association of Midwives and the Association des sages-femmes d'Haïti have developed a training program on SMR based on the WRA charter. Objectives: Increase understanding of women's rights in SM among various stakeholders in the Croix-des-Bouquets commune.
DISCUSSION:
Results: Development of a training program and all related tools. 12 midwife trainers were trained. They delivered 16 sessions, over 5 days and 2 days. In all, 292 people were trained, including 95 men and 212 women. Best practices:To ensure that everyone who comes into contact with women provides a rights-respecting service, training was also offered to matrons, multi-purpose community health workers, peer educators, support staff and security guards. Training was provided in French and Creole.
EVIDENCE WHERE RELEVANT:
Lessons learned: Despite the worrying security situation in Haiti, professionals want capacity building to continue. Upgrades“ will have to be deployed according to the ”low dose-high frequency" formula. Conclusion: It is not possible to measure the improvement of SMRs in the field in the situation prevailing in Haiti. However, we can assume that a better understanding of women's rights in SM has been achieved.
KEY MESSAGE:
Respectful maternity care can save lives.
