ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND:
The transition to parenthood is a challenging period involving physical, emotional, and social changes, particularly during the baby’s first year of life. Parenting education emerges as a key intervention aimed at supporting parents in adapting to their new roles, meeting the demands associated with parenthood, and developing parental competencies. In this context, participation in parenting education programs positively impacts the development of these skills.
OBJECTIVES:
To explore parents’ perceptions of the contributions of the parenting education program “MaisPaisMaisBebés” in developing parenting skills; to assess parental confidence; to evaluate parental satisfaction; and to identify barriers and suggestions for improvement regarding participation in the program.
METHODS:
This is a mixed-methods study involving parents who participated in the “MaisPaisMaisBebés” parenting education program. Qualitative data will be collected through focus groups, and quantitative data will be obtained using two validated instruments for the Portuguese population: the Parental Confidence Scale and the Program Satisfaction Scale. A sociodemographic questionnaire will also be administered.
RESULTS:
Four main categories emerged: Perceived Contributions of the Program to the Parenting Role; Level of Satisfaction with the Program Experience; Barriers and Suggestions for Improvement; and Impact of the Program on the Couple’s Relationship and Coparenting. Within each category, several subcategories were identified. Parents recognized the education program as a significant contribution to the development of their parenting competencies, reporting increased confidence in caring for their babies and a better ability to cope with the early challenges of parenthood.
CONCLUSIONS:
The “MaisPaisMaisBebés” parenting education program represents a promising intervention to promote adaptation to parenthood. Participants reported meaningful gains in parenting competencies, highlighting increased self-confidence, reduced anxiety, and access to relevant practical knowledge.
