ABSTRACT
DESCRIPTION OF TOPIC:
Clinical communication plays an essential role in the quality of care and patient safety. However, this period of communication between carers is insufficiently observed during shift changes. The aim of this study is to describe the knowledge and practices of healthcare workers in terms of clinical transmission in referral maternity units in Burkina Faso. It is a quantitative descriptive cross-sectional study carried out from 07 August 2023 to 22 November 2023 among 169 healthcare workers. It involved all care workers in level III maternity units in Ouagadougou. Exhaustive sampling with an accidental recruitment method was used. Data were collected using a rating scale for observation and a questionnaire to assess knowledge. Epi Info software version 7.1.6 was used to analyze the data after cleaning the database. The participation rate in the study was 53.48%. Caregivers' overall level of knowledge about clinical transmission and patient safety was 45.64%. The overall compliance of carers' practices was judged to be 'not compliant' at 9.60%. The results of this study showed a low level of general knowledge and compliance of healthcare workers' practices in relation to clinical transmission. Efforts to improve this situation through training and the introduction of a standardized model are essential.
