ABSTRACT
PURPOSE:
The main objective of this newly developed German-language textbook is to identify areas of action through which midwives can contribute to planetary health in their care and support of women and families. In doing so, midwives reflect on their professional responsibility and actively participate in the societal transformation processes that are urgently needed.
DISCUSSION:
This book addresses the pressing challenges posed by climate change and the transgression of planetary boundaries, which have profound implications for midwifery. It aims to foster a deeper understanding of these complex interconnections through the framework of Planetary Health, highlighting the key role midwives play in prevention, education and sustainable care delivery. Experts from various disciplines describe the health impacts of climate change on pregnancy, childbirth, and early parenthood, offering practical guidance based on current scientific findings and case studies for integrating Planetary Health principles into midwifery practice. The book provides evidence-based strategies to strengthen competencies and underscores the need for continuous education and cross-disciplinary collaboration.
EVIDENCE WHERE RELEVANT:
The environmental crisis and exceeding of planetary boundaries increasingly affect maternal and neonatal health, exposing midwives to new and complex challenges. Addressing these requires adaptive, interdisciplinary strategies in both research and practice. Positioned at the intersection of health equity, social justice, and ecological responsibility, midwives are uniquely equipped to foster resilience and support community adaptation efforts.
KEY MESSAGE:
Midwives are key agents of change in responding to the climate crisis. Embracing a Planetary Health perspective empowers them to navigate the evolving demands of their profession while promoting sustainable care. Inspiring midwives to engage in proactive, environmentally conscious practice is essential to safeguarding both human and planetary well-being.
