ABSTRACT
PURPOSE:
This presentation will provide preceptors with tools necessary to create supportive learning environments while also providing constructive student feedback. Methods for student case presentation and preceptor feedback such as the SNAPPS Model and the One-Minute Preceptor will be reviewed. At the end of the session, preceptors will have the tools necessary to balance supervision and independence, assess clinical reasoning, confront challenging situations while displaying professionalism and effective role-modeling.

DISCUSSION:
Preceptors make a significant impact by shaping students’ clinical competence, professional identity, and confidence. Great preceptors foster a supportive, safe, and reflective learning environment, model professional behaviors, and provide opportunities for hands-on practice and critical thinking. A positive preceptor-student relationship is associated with increased student confidence, retention, and satisfaction, while negative interactions can undermine learning and even contribute to student progression. Midwifery programs provide the foundational knowledge that necessary for students to practice midwifery. Midwifery preceptors however are the bridge between academic knowledge and clinical practice. Most preceptors are not "taught" how to precept. Preceptors need to understand the role and acquire the skills necessary to go from good to great!

EVIDENCE WHERE RELEVANT:
Additional References will be provided. •Blumenfeld, J., Alspaugh, A., Wright, L., Lindberg, L. (2024). Identifying drivers and barriers to precepting midwifery students: “A little part of me lives on in each student midwife”. Journal of Midwifery & Women's Health, 69(5), 727-734.

KEY MESSAGE:
"Teaching one person while caring for another” (Blumenfeld et al., 2024) Midwives provide safe evidenced-based care to patients and families. They also want to provide the same level of precepting for their students. While there are challenges and barriers to precepting students, it is also can be a very rewarding experience for midwives. Having the skills to precept well will increase both student and preceptor satisfaction. We need more midwifery preceptors to reach ICM's goal of "One million more midwives!" Pregnancy - preparation
