ABSTRACT
THE LEARNING OUTCOMES:
This 90-minute interactive workshop equips midwives/birth providers with the knowledge and skills to promote physiological birth and newborn transition to improve quality of care and perinatal outcomes in low-resource settings. Participants will gain tools to transform childbirth experiences and outcomes in their communities by centering equity and adaptability.
1. Gain knowledge and demonstrate skills in the use of physiologic birth tools and how to implement their use in low-resource settings
2. Understand evidence-based emergency skills that can be applied in low-resource settings for better outcomes
3. Obtain skills in physiologic cord clamping, somersault maneuver, and bedside neonatal resuscitation
THE PROCESS/ACTIVITIES:
20 minutes: Interactive lecture on hormonal cascade, optimizing physiologic birth
20 minutes: Interactive lecture on fetal heart assessment, physiologic cord clamping, somersault maneuver(video), bedside newborn resuscitation
20 minutes: Instructor-guided practice with supporting movement in labor using: birth ball, peanut ball, birthing stool, rebozo, hammock
20 minutes: Instructor-guided practice with fetal heart assessment, somersault maneuver, bedside neonatal resuscitation
10 minutes: Wrap up questions, discussion of site-specific supports and interventions
AUDIENCE PARTICIPATION:
The audience will participate through actively utilizing tools and practicing skills, guided by three experts.
