ABSTRACT
DESCRIPTION OF TOPIC:
Post-partum hemorrhage (PPH) remains the leading cause of maternal mortality. In Uganda, it accounts for 36% of the maternal deaths according to the MPDSR report 2023/2024. It can happen to any mother immediately, within 24hours after delivery or between 24-six weeks after childbirth. Everyone has something to do in the prevention and treatment of PPH. The WHO recommends the use of the first response care bundle, i.e., EMOTIVE, which has shown 60% early reduction in adverse PPH outcomes among the trials done in Africa. Uganda is among the countries implementing EMOTIVE. As a national trainer, I have seen how EMOTIVE training transforms not only knowledge but also confidence, collaboration, and preparedness. The EMOTIVE training uses a low-dose, high-frequency hands-on model. The trainers are practicing health workers who bring real-life and relevant context to each session. It emphasizes practical skills, decision-making, effective communication, and teamwork. Midwives are the primary participants who describe being empowered, especially when trained alongside the doctors. Training has been done in Uganda with the coordination and financial support from the Safe Birth Africa Project, which also funds essential commodities like heat- stable carbetocin. The goal is to reach midwives and equip them with the tools and mindset to act quickly in PPH emergencies. These trainings have led to improved, timely decision-making, effective communication, confidence, and adherence to evidence-based practices. Midwives make efforts to monitor for the first two hours after delivery, use a single oxytocic drug, and improve emergency preparedness with PPH kits, empowering each other. Feedback from trainees emphasizes RMC, strengthened teamwork, and timely referrals. The EMOTIVE training has been a catalyst for change in maternal health outcomes, fostering motivated, empowered, and informed midwives who lead and advocate for safe birth.
