ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND:
Social support provided to mothers during the postpartum period plays a crucial role in the success of breastfeeding. However, the lack of knowledge among family members may hinder rather than help the process. There is limited research on the effect of educating family members on breastfeeding outcomes.

OBJECTIVES:
This study aimed to evaluate the impact of breastfeeding education provided to family members supporting mothers in the postpartum period on various breastfeeding parameters.

METHODS:
This randomized controlled experimental study was conducted between January 1, 2021, and April 30, 2022, at a state hospital in Konya, Turkey. The study included 133 family members supporting mothers with infants aged 0–6 months (67 experimental, 66 control). Mothers in both groups received standard breastfeeding counseling; in addition, family members in the experimental group received structured breastfeeding education. Data were collected using the BBAT, IIFAS, and PBSES scales.

RESULTS:
The exclusive breastfeeding rate at one month was significantly lower in the control group (p = .003). BBAT scores were significantly higher in the experimental group before discharge (p = .001). After discharge, both mothers’ and family members’ IIFAS scores were significantly higher in the experimental group (p = .007, p = .0001, respectively). PBSES scores were also significantly higher in the experimental group (p = .001).

CONCLUSIONS:
Breastfeeding education provided to family members positively influences maternal breastfeeding success, attitudes, and self-efficacy.
