ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND:
İklim değişikliği anne ve fetüs sağlığını olumsuz etkiler. İklim değişikliği yalnızca kadınların sağlıklarını koruma çabalarını değil, aynı zamanda iklim kaygılarını da etkiler. Özellikle, gelecekle ilgili belirsizlik çocuk sahibi olma ve doğurganlık niyetleriyle ilgili kararları da etkileyebilir.
OBJECTIVES:
This study aims to determine the effect of women's climate anxiety and awareness levels regarding the effects of climate change on maternal and fetal health on their desire to avoid pregnancy.
METHODS:
This study is descriptive and cross-sectional in nature. The study was conducted with 365 women who visited the family planning clinic affiliated with a maternity hospital between March and May 2025. Data were collected using face-to-face interviews. The Personal Information Form, Pregnancy Avoidance Scale, Climate Change Awareness Scale, and Climate Change Women's Anxiety Scale were used to collect data. The data obtained were analyzed using univariate and multivariate tests.
RESULTS:
The average age of women is 28.17±4.30. It has been determined that 66.6% of women use family planning methods, 61.4% believe that climate change has negative consequences, and 36.4% have postponed pregnancy due to climate change. A positive correlation was found between avoiding pregnancy and climate change awareness (r=0.133, p=0.011) and anxiety level (r=0.846, p<0.001).
CONCLUSIONS:
It has been concluded that increasing climate anxiety among women is a predictive factor for avoiding pregnancy. Although increased awareness of the effects of climate change on maternal and fetal health increases the desire to avoid pregnancy, it has been determined that this is not a determining factor.
KEY MESSAGE:
avoiding pregnancy, climate anxiety, climate awareness, climate change.
