ABSTRACT
PURPOSE:
The Independent Midwives Association Lesotho (IMAL) embarked on a transformative journey to enhance visibility, sustainability, and member engagement through the ICM BRIDGE Lightful Programme. The goal was to build fundraising capacity, strengthen digital presence, and foster policy-level and community advocacy to elevate midwifery in Lesotho.

DISCUSSION:
Through the Lightful Programme, IMAL gained critical digital and strategic communication skills. These empowered the association to launch its website (www.imal.org.ls), active Facebook and Instagram platforms, and increase membership significantly. IMAL successfully mobilised resources by selling branded merchandise (raising M2,875.00) and engaged midwives in grassroots fundraising. Under this program, two key public health events were organised: the Perinatal Mortality Awareness Campaign at Mabote Filter Clinic and the International Day of the Midwife (IDM) celebration at Nazareth Health-Center, attended by high-level stakeholders including the Director General-MOH, Principal Secretary, WHO, UNFPA and PEPFAR representatives, as well, midwives and the community at large. These events amplified national awareness of maternal and new-born health issues and IMAL's role in addressing them. Media engagement prior and post via national TV and radio further extended their impact. IMAL’s work not only educated the public but also created platforms for community dialogue, policy discussions, and midwifery recognition. Despite challenges such as limited infrastructure and financial constraints, the association has grown stronger demonstrating resilience, innovation, and leadership.

EVIDENCE WHERE RELEVANT:
Quantifiable successes include increased membership, a digital footprint, financial returns from fundraising, successful event execution, and national media appearances. All items funded through the BRIDGE grant were procured and used as planned.

KEY MESSAGE:
Empowering midwives’ associations through digital capacity-building, strategic partnerships, and grassroots advocacy can transform midwifery leadership in low-resource settings. IMAL’s story shows how intentional support and community mobilisation can drive sustainable progress, piece by piece, midwife by midwife, ultimately strengthening health systems, increasing visibility, and inspiring others to invest in midwifery-led solutions across similar contexts.
