ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND:
Child-birthing plays an important role in every woman’s life. In India Data shows 77.3% of women reported mistreatment in at least 1 of 17 items measure. 9.1% of women self-reported mistreatment, whereas 22.4% of mistreatment was observed by the observer.

OBJECTIVES:
To determine the status of Respectful Maternity Care in selected hospitals.

METHODS:
An exploratory study using a quantitative approach was conducted on 145 women who had normal vaginal deliveries at a hospital in Rishikesh, Uttarakhand, over four weeks. Data was collected using a self-structured tool with a reliability score of 0.8 (Cronbach’s alpha). Additionally, a qualitative component involved interviews with 18 participants, using a semi-structured interview schedule until data saturation was reached.

RESULTS:
The study found that the median total score for Respectful Maternity Care (RMC) was 36, with an overall mean percentage score of 85.68%. Among the eight domains assessed, "Availability of Competent and Motivated Human Resources" scored highest at 95%, while "Informed Consent and Effective Communication" scored lowest at 68.45%. There was no statistically significant association between RMC scores and the socio-demographic variables of the participants. In the qualitative analysis, three main themes emerged: experienced care at the facility, women’s expectations regarding care, and experiences of disrespectful maternity care. These themes highlighted women’s perceptions and expectations related to maternity services.

CONCLUSIONS:
The study found that while women were generally satisfied with the healthcare services and facilities provided, they faced challenges such as delays in receiving timely care and unexpected financial demands after childbirth. These issues, coupled with gaps in care during normal delivery, contributed to negative experiences for the women.

KEY MESSAGE:
This study underscores the critical role of nurses in identifying and addressing mistreatment during childbirth. By recognizing signs of disrespectful care, nurses can intervene to ensure that women receive dignified and compassionate care. Poster session 2 (Group A)
