ABSTRACT
PURPOSE:
Training obstetric nurses is seen as one of the most effective strategies for reducing maternal morbidity and mortality in the world. It was with this in mind that 15 years ago, together with the Association of Obstetricians/Nurse Midwives, we started the embryo of the project for the first Residency in Obstetric Nursing (RESENFO) in Ceará-Brazil. Objective: To report on the RESENFO-Brazil-Ceará training experience.
DISCUSSION:
Experience report from the Department of Nursing and Maternity School Assis Chateaubriand/UFC. Data collection: March 2013 to March 2025 and consisted of three parts: first - to show the pedagogical strategies for resident training, such as: theoretical / practical content, preceptorship, monitoring and evaluation Second part: data related to the goals required by the program: number of assistance to vaginal deliveries and neonates, prenatal consultations at the three levels of health care. And third: a survey of the graduates and their insertion in the job market. It was based on the Brazilian Ministry of Health's good practices for pregnancy, labor and birth, according to the WHO.
EVIDENCE WHERE RELEVANT:
RESENFO has 5,470 hours, 80% of which is in-service practice and 20% theory. Pedagogical actions include the general and pedagogical coordinator, tutor, field preceptor and teachers. Monitoring and assessment is based on competencies with active methodologies such as OSCE, clinical simulation and skills training. The average number of procedures is 110 vaginal deliveries, 35 prenatal deliveries and 30 neonatal deliveries. As for the profile of the graduates, the majority work in the hospital network, in public service. Conclusion: The training of obstetric nurses has changed the scenario of labor and birth care in the state of Ceará.
KEY MESSAGE:
With excellence, effort and dedication, we are contributing to a million midwives in the world and certainly preventing thousands of maternal deaths.
