ABSTRACT
PURPOSE:
This project aimed to promote preconception care (PCC) in Japan by developing, implementing, and evaluating educational tools tailored to developmental stages. The initiative sought to raise awareness from early life stages and foster a culture where individuals are better prepared for future reproductive health decisions. It also aimed to bridge gaps in knowledge and access to reliable information among community members, especially adolescents and young adults.
DISCUSSION:
The JANP Center, based at The Jikei University School of Nursing, developed a community-based model to support PCC through collaboration with public health professionals, educators, physicians, midwives, pharmacists, and psychologists. In 2024, five stakeholder meetings were held to co-develop educational materials: a set of age-specific informational cards and a website. These materials were designed around three pillars—nutrition and body weight, vaccination, and physical and mental development. In 2025, the materials were distributed to childcare centers, schools, and universities, and a consultation service was launched using LINE, telephone, Zoom, and in-person formats. Public lectures are also planned to enhance outreach.
EVIDENCE WHERE RELEVANT:
Educational cards and website content were developed collaboratively during five stakeholder meetings in 2024. In 2025, the cards were distributed to childcare facilities, schools, and universities, and the website was officially launched. A multi-method evaluation is planned, including (1) surveys with parents and university students on PCC knowledge, lifestyle, and vaccine intentions; (2) analysis of local data on cervical cancer screening and HPV vaccination rates; and (3) qualitative interviews. The current presentation highlights the design and implementation of this community-based initiative.
KEY MESSAGE:
PCC education tailored to developmental stages and delivered through community collaboration can increase awareness and readiness for future reproductive health. Locally driven, multi-stakeholder engagement is essential for building sustainable and culturally relevant health education strategies.
