ABSTRACT
THE LEARNING OUTCOMES:
Describe perineal anatomy with particular detail of the perineal body.
Define classifications of perineal lacerations.
Identify two indications for surgical repair of perineal trauma.
Demonstrate basic surgical skills, including aseptic technique and handling surgical instruments.
Choose a suture and needle for the laceration type.
Perform instrument ties.
Perform repair of perineal laceration on foam and perineal models.
THE PROCESS/ACTIVITIES:
Review (15 minutes)
Perineal anatomy
Classifications of perineal lacerations
Indications for repair of lacerations
Varieties of suture and needles for the repair of lacerations
Practice knot tying. (15 minutes)
Practice second-degree perineal repair (50 minutes)
Discuss post-repair assessment of hemostasis and approximation. Workshop wrap-up (10 minutes)
AUDIENCE PARTICIPATION:
This is a hands-on workshop designed for midwives needing to learn or review suturing skills, providing hands-on practice of suturing techniques using silicone pads and foam models.
