ABSTRACT
PURPOSE:
The Sexualidad Sin Fakes (SSF) program aims to promote Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) from a positive, community-based, and rights-centered approach. Led by a midwife, SSF integrates the holistic perspective of midwifery, recognizing sexuality as an essential dimension of youth well-being, autonomy, and citizenship.
DISCUSSION:
Unlike approaches focused solely on risks (STIs, HIV, pregnancy), SSF responds to youth demands for content related to consent, pleasure, relationships, diversity, and technology. The program takes place in public and community settings, using workshops, cultural events, graphic materials, and health promotion actions. The midwifery lens has been central in framing young people as rights-holders and midwives as agents of social change, with strong community ties and ethical-political commitment.
EVIDENCE WHERE RELEVANT:
Since 2020, over 4,600 young people have participated in Uruguay and Mexico. Biannual surveys show clear progress: at the start, only 23% could identify gender-based violence; by the end, 100% could. In 2022 and 2024, 66% reported receiving intimate images without consent. Additionally, 33% could not name a single sexual or reproductive right, revealing persistent barriers to informed decision-making. These data inform the program’s evolving educational strategies.
KEY MESSAGE:
The experience of Sexualidad Sin Fakes demonstrates that midwifery, through its comprehensive training, community presence, and gender perspective, plays a strategic role in building transformative CSE. Through their community-based work, midwives expand the vision of sexual and reproductive health beyond a biological and reproductive-age-women-only focus. Their role enables collective reflection and action processes that promote the free, informed, and violence-free exercise of sexuality—especially for children, adolescents, and youth.
