ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND:
In Denmark, midwives manage telephone triage for pregnant and birthing women. However, the system lacks standardisation, and language barriers may compromise safety. Women with non-Danish ethnic backgrounds are overrepresented in perinatal adverse outcomes, including stillbirths.
OBJECTIVES:
To develop and evaluate a multilingual voice bot to improve the safety, efficiency, and equity of telephone triage in maternity care.
METHODS:
The project comprises three phases: A qualitative study involving interviews with women, midwives, and doctors to identify critical symptoms and triage challenges, especially in non-Danish languages. A Delphi study involving experts and pregnant women to prioritise alarm symptoms and communication needs. Development of a training programme and evaluation of triage quality based on communication analyses.
RESULTS:
The study is ongoing. Preliminary insights highlight the need for improved symptom recognition, standardised communication, and multilingual support in telephone triage.
CONCLUSIONS:
Telephone triage is vital in early identification of complications. A voice bot could support midwives by ensuring that key alarm symptoms are identified consistently, even when language is a barrier.Developing a voice bot for telephone triage has the potential to reduce communication errors and improve timely access to care, especially for women with limited Danish language skills.
KEY MESSAGE:
This project addresses a growing need for equitable, high-quality maternity triage. It supports midwives in their triage- and gatekeeping role and promotes safer care pathways for all pregnant women, regardless of language proficiency.
