ABSTRACT
PURPOSE:
This abstract highlights the journey of Tammim Akter, Vice President of the Bangladesh Midwifery Society (BMS), as an inspiring example of young midwifery leadership development in Bangladesh. Supported by her ICM executive sponsor and UNFPA's midwifery team, Tammim aims to share her experiences and inspire other aspiring midwife leaders, advocating for the crucial role of midwives in healthcare leadership.
DISCUSSION:
A pioneer among ICM-standard trained midwives in Bangladesh (2013), Tammim quickly demonstrated leadership potential, serving on her student council. After licensure in 2016, her work with Save the Children, supported by UNFPA, was pivotal in establishing appropriate working environments for midwives in Primary Healthcare Centres, fostering essential collaborative communication skills. As one of the first government-deployed midwives in 2018, she championed the midwifery scope of practice. Her rapid ascent within the BMS, from Executive Board member in 2018 to Vice-President in 2021, underscores the impact of youth-led initiatives in challenging policymaker dismissals of young midwives' leadership abilities and promoting gender equity.
EVIDENCE WHERE RELEVANT:
Tammim's leadership has been reinforced through formal training via UNFPA's partnerships with the Royal College of Midwives and the International Confederation of Midwives. Her continued professional development includes completing a post-basic Bachelor's in Midwifery. Evidence of her impact is seen in her daily practice, where she manages obstetric emergencies and provides strong leadership, saving lives. Her selection for ICM's Executive Sponsorship Programme, pairing her with UNFPA's International Midwifery Specialist, further demonstrates a commitment to nurturing future midwife leaders through mentorship, networking, and skill development, advocating for their inclusion at all healthcare levels.
KEY MESSAGE:
Tammim Akter's journey exemplifies the power of dedicated individuals and strategic partnerships in strengthening midwifery leadership. Her story underscores the vital need to empower young midwives, ensuring their voices are heard and their leadership potential is recognized and utilized to achieve safe births for all women in Bangladesh.
