ABSTRACT
PURPOSE:
This presentation shares findings from the National Council of Indigenous Midwives’ (NCIM) 2025 Landscape Report, which maps the current state of Indigenous midwifery across Canada. This work seeks to illustrate the growth, resilience, and ongoing reclamation of Indigenous midwifery as a vital expression of self-determination and community health.

DISCUSSION:
Using newly developed tools—including a national map of practicing Indigenous midwives by region, a map of Indigenous communities actively reclaiming midwifery, and visual data on Indigenous midwifery students and community-based education models—this session will explore where Indigenous midwifery is thriving and where further support is needed. We will highlight regional differences, identify key policy and funding drivers, and reflect on the impact of community-led education in expanding access and leadership.

EVIDENCE WHERE RELEVANT:
This updated landscape draws from NCIM’s national tracking efforts, community surveys, and collaborations with midwifery associations and educational programs. It reflects both quantitative and qualitative inputs from Indigenous midwives, students, and community leaders, offering a data-informed picture of where growth is occurring and what systemic changes have made that possible.

KEY MESSAGE:
Indigenous midwifery is experiencing powerful momentum across Canada. Mapping this movement helps us understand how Indigenous communities are reclaiming birth, closing access gaps, and advancing reproductive justice. As this growth continues, supporting Indigenous midwifery through sustained investment in community-led education, practice, and leadership remains essential to reconciliation and health equity.
