ABSTRACT
PURPOSE:
Midwives role in effective midwifery care is critical. Focusing on identification and proper use of social capital, midwives should lead from where they are, to positively impact people they serve and their countries' economies.
DISCUSSION:
Social capital, defined as the resources available through social ties and networks, has the potential to significantly impact midwifery services provision. Social capital includes components such as social networks, community support, and social norms, all of which can help or impede quality midwifery service delivery. Through prioritizing clients' needs midwives can influence the world by strategically using social capital and engaging in open discussions.
EVIDENCE WHERE RELEVANT:
By using social capital, the women's and newborn hospital enhanced service delivery from 2017 to 2023. The work completed over the course of six years is reflected in the Chief Nursing and Midwifery Office(CNMO). Among the innovations made during the period include adequate and timely provision of consumables and medicines, establishment of the obstetrics emergency unit, and the neonatal triage. Additionally, the Journal on the Zambian Algorithm of Neonatal Resuscitation was produced as a consequence of extensive efforts of stakeholders to support the training of healthcare practitioners in advanced neonatal resuscitation and obstetric emergency management. Although CNMO's office is often overlooked, the advocacy and voice on important aspects of healthcare administration allowed for the visibility.
KEY MESSAGE:
Midwives should recognize impactful social capital to advocate for staff midwives, women, and newborns. Utilise intellect, expertise, in social capital management to engage and also to address harmful social constructs, norms and beliefs, fostering trust and confidence, to mobilize resources. Lead from where you are; we are responsible for our own efforts and influence.
