ABSTRACT
PURPOSE:
The SBAR (Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation) method was developed to ensure continuity of care and effective communication between professionals, as well as to promote maternal safety, when transferring information within a Maternal-Fetal Medicine service. To acquire theoretical knowledge and practical skills, an interdisciplinary workshop was held.
DISCUSSION:
The workshop took place in a maternal-fetal medicine service at a tertiary hospital in Catalonia, Spain. 8 midwives, 4 student midwives, 6 nurses and 11 healthcare assistants from the obstetric unit (emergency room, delivery room and intermediate obstetric care unit) as well as the antenatal and postpartum wards participated. The training activity included a presentation on the SBAR information transfer method, analysis of information transfer by watching videos simulating clinical situations, and role-playing with SBAR methodology. Following the training, the participants completed a questionnaire designed to evaluate their satisfaction with the institutional Microsoft Office Forms.
EVIDENCE WHERE RELEVANT:
A descriptive analysis was performed using SPSS Statistics v27.0.1.0.26 responses to the ad hoc questionnaire were obtained (89.6% of the total number of attendees): 50% were nurses (n=13), 34.6% were midwives (n=9), and 15.4% were healthcare assistants (n=4). 65,4% of respondents had less than 10 years’ experience in the service. The workshop was rated as follows: content 9.31±0.8; teaching staff 9.46±0.7; methodology 9.4±0.8; space 9±1.4; timetable 8.4±2. Overall rating: 9.46± 0.6 out of 10.88.5% (n=23) considered the SBAR method to be applicable and useful for improving the transfer of information between the obstetric unit and the wards’ service users.
KEY MESSAGE:
The workshop was very well received by the participants. The SBAR method is expected to have a positive impact on women’s safety and on the efficiency of information transmission among professionals as a structured communication tool. It needs to be implemented and monitored.
