ABSTRACT
PURPOSE:
The integration of midwives as laborists within obstetric care models presents an opportunity to enhance interdisciplinary collaboration, resident education, patient outcomes, and provider satisfaction.

DISCUSSION:
This presentation explores the role of midwives as laborists—clinicians dedicated exclusively to managing labor and delivery within hospital settings—and their potential to serve as key contributors in building cohesive, team-based models of maternity care. By leveraging their unique skill set and patient-centered approach, midwives can play a central role in teaching residents the nuanced, hands-on art of obstetrics, often underrepresented in high-intervention models. Their presence also supports a sustainable work environment, reducing burnout and improving job satisfaction among physicians, midwives, and residents.

EVIDENCE WHERE RELEVANT:
At the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, the introduction of certified nurse-midwife (CNM) laborists three years ago has led to a significant cultural transformation on the Labor and Delivery unit. This innovative model has fostered an environment of mutual respect and strengthened interdisciplinary collaboration between midwives, obstetricians, residents, and nurses. The consistent presence of midwives as laborists has enhanced collegiality and trust, improving both patient and provider satisfaction. Additionally, midwives have expanded their scope of practice by participating in the management of high-risk obstetric cases, contributing meaningfully to complex care, and growing professionally as advanced practice providers.

KEY MESSAGE:
This model demonstrates how midwifery leadership can improve clinical outcomes, enrich medical education, and promote a thriving, respectful team culture. This session will emphasize the value of midwives as laborists in a high-functioning interdisciplinary obstetric team by sharing implementation strategies and lessons learned.
