ABSTRACT
PURPOSE:
In low-resource settings midwives face critical challenges in accessing timely knowledge and decision-making support. SDA is a digital educational tool with 19 modules, covering critical obstetric and neonatal content including both preventative and emergency care. It is a handy job aid and decision-making tool when midwives gain mastery in its navigation. Introducing SDA to student-midwives enhances this. As the SDA is regularly updated with the latest WHO guidelines, it facilitates continued learning and professional development even after graduation.
DISCUSSION:
Integration of SDA as an add-on digital learning tool for Midwifery Education at BRAC University was piloted. The curriculum was mapped with SDA content and areas of integration were identified. A workshop for educators was done to analyse the possibilities of integration. Teaching learning methodologies using adult learning principles integrating SDA were presented. Two modalities of integration were identified: (i) Including SDA exercises during classroom teaching (ii) introducing SDA as a self-directed learning tool for internship students targeting completion of the in-app exam to attain SDA champion certificate. Currently 50 midwifery students are undergoing SDA self-directed learning program. The results will be discussed as part of the presentation
EVIDENCE WHERE RELEVANT:
Research reveal that digital learning platforms enhance student engagement, academic performance and facilitate personalised self-paced learning experience. Using educational apps help students learn more and motivates to learn. Digital learning platforms are pivotal components in modern education, to revolutionise teaching and learning, making it engaging, accessible, and effective for students.
KEY MESSAGE:
Preliminary feedback from educators is positive towards the added value of SDA. Integration of SDA into midwifery education transforms learning to be active, engaging, interesting and motivating. It helps midwives begin their learning journey during pre-service education, leading to life-long learning, which can eventually revolutionise midwifery care, especially in under-resourced environments, where timely, updated, culturally sensitive information is critical for decision-making and saving lives.
