ABSTRACT
PURPOSE:
In the Bachelor's program in midwifery at ZHAW, individual obstetric procedures are taught during the early semesters. What is often lacking, however, is an understanding of the entire process of childbirth and how these individual steps are logically connected. This is where «Fit for Practice» comes in. This teaching module aims to consolidate and strengthen the midwifery competencies acquired by students. Students in cross-semester peer learning groups work on relevant midwifery case studies. They expand upon concepts and topics from the first and third semesters, reflect on their actions in simulated scenarios with actors, and analyze varying courses of action. The focus is on communication, clinical assessment, obstetric care, and ethical competencies.
DISCUSSION:
The “Fit for Practice” module promotes theory-to-practice transfer and encourages students’ reflection on acquired skills. Collaboration across semesters fosters mutual learning at different stages of education. Students improve their ability to identify physiological and pathological processes, initiate appropriate measures, and to critically evaluate them. It is evident that learning in mixed-experience groups stimulates reflection and strengthens the understanding of physiological processes within midwifery practice. It fosters the development of professional, social and personal competences.
EVIDENCE WHERE RELEVANT:
The module is continuously evaluated, using a questionnaire with both open-ended and closed questions. Another evaluation is planned for January 2026 in the form of focus group interviews. Initial results indicate that learning in heterogeneous groups enhances reflection and deepens the understanding of obstetric processes. Students report significant competency development, for example in the area of communicating with patients in critical situations.
KEY MESSAGE:
"Fit for Practice" is an effective peer learning module that supports the transfer of theoretical knowledge into practice and promotes the development of essential midwifery competencies. Continuous reflection and application of learned content contribute to a sustainable improvement of practical skills and provide valuable insight for professional practice.
