ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND:
Developing field-specific training programs to support midwives' readiness for the effects of climate change on maternal-fetal health and integrating them into health services are among the interventions that will increase resilience against the effects of climate change.
OBJECTIVES:
This study was conducted to determine the training needs regarding knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors regarding climate change and its effects on maternal-fetal health for a clinical guide to be developed to increase midwives' field competencies in climate change.
METHODS:
The study is the needs analysis section of a doctoral thesis developed with a design-based research method and prepared for a clinical guide specific to midwives. Data were collected through the Pregnancy-Specific Climate Change Awareness Scale. It was conducted with 300 midwife participants.
RESULTS:
The average age of the participants was 33.65±8.58, average years of experience was 10.23±9.05. The average score on the Pregnancy-Specific Climate Change Awareness Scale was 86.95±15.86. It was reported that 56.7% of the midwives were informed about climate change. 84% stated that climate change had negative effects on women's reproductive health, 86% stated that climate change had negative effects on the health of pregnant women, 83.3% stated that climate change had negative effects on fetal health, and 88.3% stated that climate change had negative effects on the pregnancy process. However, it was determined that midwives didn't have sufficient information about their roles to protect themselves from these effects. They stated that they wanted to receive training on climate change and its effects on health, its effects on the health of women and pregnant women, measures to be taken to reduce health effects, and sustainability.
CONCLUSIONS:
Midwives have high knowledge and awareness of global climate change. However, they don't have sufficient knowledge and skills regarding midwifery-specific roles in preventing its effects on maternal-fetal health.
KEY MESSAGE:
Midwives are advocates for the next generation.
