ABSTRACT
DESCRIPTION OF TOPIC:
In July 2021, we launched a project aimed at expanding the services provided by the parties to include harm reduction services for women undergoing abortion. This project offers comprehensive support so women can resolve their concerns and self-manage their abortions with the support of professional representatives, as well as counseling and provision of contraceptive methods. The project would be supported through WhatsApp and video calls, if necessary. We obtained funding from Fos Feminista. The project consisted of several stages: convening professional representatives, selection, training and skills building, legal counseling, distribution of supplies, social marketing, and the implementation of an online care system via WhatsApp. The results obtained from July 2021 to May 2025 are: 53 midwives have been trained with advanced competencies in safe abortion, risk and harm reduction (RDR) counseling, contraceptive counseling, and provision of contraceptive methods (implants and IUDs). 1,245 remote consultations have been provided to women undergoing abortions, of which 915 successfully terminated their pregnancies. Only 3% required referral to a hospital, but without major complications. 58% of women accepted an implant or IUD as a contraceptive method.
RELEVANCE TO MIDWIFERY:
The appropriate use of telemedicine resources allows midwives to expand their work. Remote or online support models have enormous potential to help thousands of women receive quality, timely, and safe reproductive health services.
