ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND:
Reducing maternal and neonatal mortality has been identified as a global priority, and the use of ultrasound in pregnancy is recognized as an intervention to address Sustainable Development Goal 3. Disparities exist within and between countries, and in low and middle-income countries, patients are not offered routine obstetric ultrasounds due to a shortage of resources and trained medical professionals.

OBJECTIVES:
To explore the possible constraints and opportunities for ultrasound training of midwives.

METHODS:
A qualitative approach with an exploratory, descriptive research design employing semi-structured interviews was used. The study population were midwives employed in Community Healthcare Clinics (CHC) in Gauteng, South Africa. Convenience sampling was used, thus selecting participants who were willing to share their stories and, in turn, contribute to the midwifery profession. A total of 10 interviews were conducted. Data was analyzed thematically.

RESULTS:
Three dominant themes emerged: 1. Value of ultrasound in and for midwifery. 2. Limitations and constraints. 3. Solutions and benefits of ultrasound for midwives. The first theme demonstrated the important use of ultrasound in pregnancy, and participants highlighted the value of offering this service at a CHC level for expectant mothers. The second theme highlighted the limitations and constraints for midwives performing ultrasounds. Participants expressed the need for midwives to be skilled in ultrasound, an indispensable part of antenatal care. The third theme emphasized the value of midwives performing ultrasound and provided possible solutions and benefits for including this integral component in routine midwifery practice.

CONCLUSIONS:
Participants acknowledged the advantages of introducing ultrasound for midwives, benefiting not only the patients but also the midwifery profession.

KEY MESSAGE:
Task shifting this valuable service to midwives, in keeping with trends globally, will reduce the number of referrals to professionals who are already struggling to meet the demands of the healthcare system and will enhance the care provided to all pregnant patients.
