ABSTRACT
PURPOSE:
Obstetric emergencies, while rare, can arise unexpectedly. Regular drills and simulations are essential for enhancing midwives' competencies in managing chaotic situations and improving patient outcomes. However, organizing these drills usually requires a multidisciplinary team and simultaneous participation from midwives. A more efficient alternative is to implement interactive verbal drills, which can fit into busy ward routines and allow for staggered participation. This strategy not only strengthens responses to obstetric emergencies but also enhances team communication and identifies performance gaps for quality improvement.

DISCUSSION:
With a birth rate exceeding 4,000 annually and a high attrition rate, interactive verbal drills provide a comprehensive way to maximize clinical competency. The Model of the Alliance of Innovation for Maternal Health guided the design of maternal safety care bundles for various emergencies, consisting of four "R" components: Readiness, Recognition and Prevention, Response, and Reporting. Scenario-based drills involve groups of four to five midwives, each assigned a specific role. The conductor presents a scenario and guides the drill using a checklist covering situation management, emergency response, and communication skills. A debriefing session at the end provides an opportunity for self-reflection and feedback, reinforcing learning and identifying areas for improvement.

EVIDENCE WHERE RELEVANT:
Launched in 2022, this initiative developed sixteen care bundles focused on critical emergencies, including cord prolapse, massive postpartum hemorrhage, eclampsia, and septic shock, etc. To enhance staff preparedness, sixty drills were conducted across all Obstetrics and Gynecology wards. The average participation rate surpassed 95%, with compliance levels between 96% and 100%. Demonstrating strong staff engagement, effective training and readiness to respond to maternal emergencies

KEY MESSAGE:
Midwives highly appreciate interactive verbal drills that are practical in clinical settings. As new graduate midwives join the team, the ongoing development of new care bundles and drills is vital for enhancing their proficiency and boosting their confidence in managing obstetric emergencies.
