ABSTRACT
PURPOSE:
The German Society for Midwifery Science (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Hebammenwissenschaft – DGHWi) is the leading scientific society for midwifery research and evidence-based practice in Germany. One of its core areas of activity is the participation in the development of evidence-based clinical guidelines.
DISCUSSION:
As the first non-medical professional society admitted to the Association of the Scientific Medical Societies in Germany (AWMF), the DGHWi plays a significant role in interdisciplinary guideline development. It contributes both through leadership roles and the professional expertise of its delegates, combining scientific perspectives with practical midwifery experience. The DGHWi’s involvement focuses on essential areas of midwifery care, including the management of uncomplicated pregnancies, vaginal birth, and postpartum as well as breastfeeding support. Its work follows the standardized, evidence-based, and quality-assured procedures defined by AWMF guidelines. Since 2017, the DGHWi has participated in 40 guideline projects of various classifications. To ensure structured and expert contributions, the DGHWi has established an internal framework: a designated member of the executive board oversees guideline work, supported by a guideline officer and a dedicated guideline commission. These bodies critically appraise draft guidelines with a midwifery-specific lens, ensuring the recommendations are scientifically sound and practically relevant.

KEY MESSAGE:
Through its active participation in the development of clinical guidelines, the DGHWi makes a significant contribution to quality assurance in evidence-based obstetric care. Integrating midwifery perspectives ensures the creation of practical, research-informed recommendations and strengthens interprofessional and interdisciplinary standards.
