ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND:
Perinatal mental health problems are a global problem on affects particularly immigrant women who are a vulnerable group maternal and infant health.
OBJECTIVES:
This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of midwife-led education based on Pender's Health Promotion Model on perinatal mental health in immigrant women. This study was produced from a doctoral dissertation.
METHODS:
This randomized controlled experimental study was conducted with 52 intervention and 54 control groups (n=48 at post-test). The study consisted of five interviews. The pre-test was conducted in the first interview during pregnancy and the post-test in the first postpartum month. After the pre-test, the intervention group received three weeks of education (three modules) and the control group received routine clinical care. Both groups were given mid-term tests during the three-week period. Education and mid-term tests were completed during pregnancy and post-tests were performed in the first postpartum month. Data were collected using a personal information form, Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale and Perinatal Anxiety Screening Scale. This study is supported by TUBITAK 1002-A Rapid Support Program(Project No:124S467).
RESULTS:
While the depression scores of the women in the intervention group did not show a significant difference over time, a significant difference was observed in the scores of the control group. Between the groups, depression scores showed a significant difference in the third and fourth interviews. Anxiety scores of women in the intervention and control groups showed a significant difference over time. There was no significant difference between the groups in terms of anxiety scores.
CONCLUSIONS:
The education based on Pender's Health Promotion Model showed a protective and improving effect on the perinatal health of immigrant women.
KEY MESSAGE:
It is recommended that educations that will contribute to the improvement of perinatal mental health of immigrant women within the framework of midwifery care models should be planned and implemented in clinical practice.
