ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND:
Identifying breastfeeding problems is vital. Motivational interviewing helps mothers overcome challenges, supporting better maternal and infant health.
OBJECTIVES:
This study was designed as a randomized controlled experimental study to determine the effect of breastfeeding counseling given with motivational interviewing technique on breastfeeding problems and anxiety.
METHODS:
The study was conducted in a Family Health Center on the Anatolian side of Istanbul between June and November 2024 with mothers who had babies between 1-3 months of age and had breastfeeding problems. The study was conducted with 60 mothers, 30 in the intervention group and 30 in the control group, by applying pre-test and post-test. The intervention group received 4 motivational interviews in addition to standard care. Research data were obtained with Personal Information Form, Breastfeeding Problems Assessment Scale (BPSAS), State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI-1).
RESULTS:
The study found that mothers who received breastfeeding counseling using the motivational interviewing technique had significantly lower scores on both the Edmonton Symptom Assessment Scale (ESAS) and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI-1) compared to those who received standard care. The mean ESAS score was 42.5 ± 7.03 for the standard care group and 32.2 ± 10.2 for the motivational interviewing group, indicating a significant reduction in symptoms (p<0.05). Similarly, the mean STAI-1 score was 38.8 ± 7.01 in the standard care group and 33.5 ± 6.37 in the motivational interviewing group, showing a significant decrease in anxiety levels (p<0.05). These results suggest that motivational interviewing is more effective than standard care in reducing both symptom burden and anxiety in postpartum mothers. The findings highlight the positive impact of motivational interviewing as a supportive counseling method during the breastfeeding period.
CONCLUSIONS:
As a result, it was determined that breastfeeding counseling given with motivational interviewing technique decreased breastfeeding problems and anxiety levels of mothers.
