ABSTRACT
DESCRIPTION OF TOPIC:
We conducted an educational initiative in which midwifery students created and operated a chatbot to respond to questions from pregnant women. Traditionally, students have developed pamphlets to provide health guidance during pregnancy. In this project, however, students explored the actual needs of pregnant women, developed question-and-answer sets for the chatbot, and managed its operation. We believe this process nurtured multiple aspects of midwifery expertise. Ethical review is planned and will be undertaken in due course.
RELEVANCE TO MIDWIFERY:
This initiative had three significant effects on midwifery education. First, it offered students an opportunity to consider the role of information and communications technology (ICT), such as chatbots and AI, in midwifery care. As pregnant women increasingly access health information online, midwives must be prepared to provide accurate, evidence-based guidance using digital tools, especially for those in remote or underserved areas. Second, the chatbot format allowed students to focus on the content of health guidance without being distracted by visual elements like pamphlet layouts. They concentrated on identifying essential information and expressing it in language that was both evidence-based and emotionally supportive. Operating the chatbot helped students understand the real concerns of pregnant women, enabling meaningful communication and the development of trusting relationships during prenatal visits. Third, through the development and use of the chatbot, students were encouraged to reflect on the core values of midwifery care—those that cannot be replaced by technology. This experience helped them recognize the unique contributions midwives make in providing compassionate, personalized care. Overall, this initiative served as a valuable educational tool for cultivating essential midwifery competencies in a digitally connected healthcare environment.
