ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND:
Most oral medications can be taken while breastfeeding. However, reports suggest that nurses who are currently working have insufficient knowledge regarding oral medications that can be taken by breastfeeding mothers. Thus, issues involving basic nursing educationhave emerged.
OBJECTIVES:
To clarify the level of nursing students’ knowledge regarding ‘how mothers’ medication usage affects breastfeeding’ by means of a questionnaire survey.
METHODS:
This study targeted 238 first- through fourth-year nursing students at University A in the 2024-2025 academic year. The survey parameters were subjects in which knowledge about medication related to breastfeeding was acquired (26 subjects), knowledge about breastfeeding (hereafter, ‘breastfeeding knowledge’; 31 items, maximum 31 points), and knowledge about medication and breastfeeding (hereafter, ‘medication knowledge’; 24 items, maximum 24 points).
This study was approved by the Institutional Review Board of Asahikawa Medical University (approval no. 23159).
RESULTS:
The mean number of subjects addressing medication and breastfeedingwas 0.7. Mean scores for breastfeeding knowledge and medication knowledge were 10.4 points and 1.8 points, respectively. The correlation between these scores was positive, though weak (r=.39,p<0.01).
CONCLUSIONS:
Survey results indicated that students did not learn how mothers’ medication usage affected breastfeeding in the subjects studied.Therefore, educational content covering ‘how mothers’ medication usage affects breastfeeding’ needs to be purposefully incorporated from the basic nursing education stage to cultivate nurses who can give sound advice on taking medications to breastfeeding mothers. This study was conducted as part of graduation thesis work in the Department of Nursing at Asahikawa Medical University in the 2024-2025 academic year.
KEY MESSAGE:
To cultivate nurses who can give sound advice on taking medications to breastfeeding mothers, such education needs to be incorporated from the stage of basic nursing education.
