ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND:
In 2016, PAHO/WHO, ALADEFE, and collaborating centers conducted a survey in Latin America and the Caribbean to assess the preparation of nursing and midwifery programs in relation to Primary Health Care (PHC), Universal Health (UH), and the social determinants of health. The results revealed weaknesses and a need to improve educational quality. As a follow-up, a self-assessment tool (EQI) was developed to support these programs. In 2024, the Universidad de los Andes in Chile was selected as a pilot midwifery institution to validate this tool and contribute to strengthening health education in the region.

OBJECTIVES:
To present the validation of the Spanish version of the EQI Toolkit at the School of Midwifery at the Universidad de los Andes, its implementation, and its usefulness in improving the quality of midwifery educational programs.

METHODS:
A pilot study was conducted with an action research approach.Use the EQI Toolkit, the UANDES team assessed midwifery education with focus on universal health and primary health care. Identified need to enhance environmental health (EH) knowledge and skills in the midwifery program. Focused on evaluating and strengthening faculty and students' understanding of EH in perinatal health. It was considered that he was a pilot and that ethics committee approval was not required.

RESULTS:
Survey identified different views of EH and its importance:1. Substantial gaps in EH knowledge2. Need for curricular improvement in EH3. Team developed a micro-curricular adaptation to incorporate EH content in the midwifery program.4. Enablers: Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle, transformative dialogue, teamwork and openness to change. 5. Barriers: Timing of survey distribution and student overload limited participation.

CONCLUSIONS:
This small-scale pilot demonstrated the utility of EQI Toolkit to:1.Identify gaps in curricula 2. Implement a process to prioritize and address gaps 3. Use quality improvement process 4. Integrate environmental health in midwife education.
