ABSTRACT
PURPOSE:
Waste is a major driver of global warming, which significantly influences climate change and the sustainability of human life. In 2021, Indonesia produced approximately 46.35 million tons of waste, predominantly composed of food waste and plastic. The "Pesona Daeng" initiative was introduced to encourage sustainable patterns of consumption and production, focusing on efficient resource use, proper waste handling, and the creation of eco-friendly products at Daya Regional Hospital in Makassar.
DISCUSSION:
The "Pesona Daeng" innovation, which focuses on managing organic and inorganic waste and promoting energy efficiency, emerged due to the high volume of non-medical waste generated by hospitals, which has not been effectively managed. This is due to limited technical capacity, internal policy implementation, and individual involvement. Hospitals generate approximately 1,000 to 1,500 kilograms of waste daily. From an environmental and economic perspective, this represents an inefficient use of resources, significant financial losses, and a major source of greenhouse gas emissions.Waste sorting and recycling practices can reduce waste generation by up to 60% and waste management costs by up to 30%, while enhancing the hospital's image as an environmentally friendly institution that upholds green hospital principles.
EVIDENCE WHERE RELEVANT:
7 innovative work programs of "Pesona Daeng" are online system policy to reduce paper waste, real food consumption in office meetings, reuse of items that are still f functional, recycling waste, green movement, increasing physical activity during working hours, and saving energy. This innovation in line with SDG's issue (Good Health and Well-being, Responsible Consumption and Production, and Climate Action)
KEY MESSAGE:
With use simple systems and tools based on internal empowerment, "Pesona Daeng" can produce useful products from waste and encourage the transformation of individual behavior towards a healthy and sustainable lifestyle.
