ABSTRACT
DESCRIPTION OF TOPIC:
At BirthVillage India, a midwife-led collaborative birth center in Kochi, India, midwives are not only primary caregivers during childbirth—they are also the organizational leaders shaping vision, policy, and practice. This presentation explores how midwifery leadership, rooted in clear, empathetic, and strategic communication, drives the success of the center. From overseeing clinical safety and mentoring junior staff to engaging with healthcare stakeholders and managing institutional growth, midwives at BirthVillage lead with a unique blend of relational intelligence and professional authority. Their ability to navigate both intimate care spaces and high-level decision-making demonstrates how midwives can effectively head organizations, set standards, and model collaborative, woman-centered systems of care.

RELEVANCE TO MIDWIFERY:
This presentation highlights the central role of communication in midwifery leadership, demonstrating how midwives can head institutions while staying grounded in woman-centered care. At BirthVillage, midwives do more than support births—they lead the entire organization. Their responsibilities span mentoring teams, coordinating multidisciplinary care, advocating for birthing rights, and engaging in policy dialogue. These functions require a strong foundation in strategic, empathetic, and authoritative communication. In many parts of the world, midwifery leadership is often undervalued or restricted to clinical spaces. This case challenges that notion, offering a replicable model of midwife-led leadership that bridges birth room intimacy with organizational stewardship. It illustrates how communication is not a “soft skill” but a critical leadership competency that directly impacts clinical outcomes, informed consent, team cohesion, and maternal satisfaction. The BirthVillage experience affirms that midwives are capable of shaping institutions that reflect midwifery values—respect, autonomy, and continuity of care. As global midwifery expands, we must invest in communication-focused leadership training to empower midwives not just as caregivers, but as institutional change-makers. This presentation is highly relevant to ICM’s mission to strengthen midwifery leadership worldwide and to reimagine maternal care systems that place midwives at the center.
